Dragnet Girl is a 1933 Japanese silent gangster film directed by Yasujirō Ozu, starring the brilliant Kinuyo Tanaka, who turns in an achingly vulnerable performance as the delinquent girlfriend of a gangster who finds redemption after encountering an innocent girl and her not-so-innocent brother. Note from Basie: I thought this was an excellent Ozu film with top-notch story, direction and acting, but I wasn't keen on the relentlessly dissonant soundtrack in this edition. I watched most of it with some Beethoven violin sonatas playing in the background instead; maybe not the most appropriate choice, but it worked better for me!
