One of the most popular German-language folk songs. The lyrics were written in 1793 by the Swiss poet Johann Martin Usteri (1763–1827), the melody was composed the same year by the Swiss composer Hans Georg Nägeli (1773–1836). Since the Biedermeier era, the song has spread throughout the German-speaking world. In 1912 it was made compulsory for school lessons in the 4th grade in Prussia.
It is an early mood song that also includes moral and religious motifs. Over time, many parodies and joke versions of the song have developed popularly, some with very crude lyrics. For example, the song has come down to us in a version where the refrain goes like this:
"Enjoy life, grandmother is shaved with a scythe, all in vain, she was not smeared with shaving foam". This version is better known than the original text.
