Deutsch ist die Saar [Former anthem of Saarland][+English translation]

In the Saarland, the tune of the "Bergmannslied" got a political character, when in 1934 Hans Maria Lux, a teacher from Saarbrücken, wrote the pro-German song "Deutsch ist die Saar" ("The Saar is German") for the referendum about the future status of the region, which was to be held on 13th January 1935. The campaign song, which was sung on the melody of the "Bergmannslied", appeared again when the Saarland became a French protectorate after WW II. On 23rd October 1955 another referendum was held about the status of the region, and in 1957, the Saarland became a part of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since this time, the tune of the "Bergmannslied" is often regarded as the unofficial anthem of the Saarland, and it is certainly better known than the semi-official "Saarlandlied". For many years, it was also used as identification signal of the public radio station "Saarländischer Rundfunk".
