COLOSSIANS and PHILEMON

1. The letter states it is from the Apostle Paul and contains many personal
references and details which reinforce that identification, including the declaration in
4:18, "The greeting [is] by my hand, Paul's. Remember my chains." No early Christian
doubted Paul's authorship, and there was no controversy over its acceptance into the
Christian canon. Indeed, Donald Guthrie says, "There is no shred of evidence that the
Pauline authorship of the whole or any part of this epistle was ever disputed until the
nineteenth century." (1)
