Here, Russians have taken advantage of a botched Ukrainian brigade rotation and took control of a Ukrainian stronghold by sneaking through abandoned pipes.

This direction has been relatively static since the start of the Russian invasion. Deeply layered Ukrainian fortifications here, stemming from the war in the Donbas, proved insurmountable for Russian forces, as they were not able to break through in the initial stages of the conflict. As such, this direction did not see any large Russian offensives and was categorized as a calmer portion of the front.

The most interesting updates come from the northern flank of Chasiv Yar. Here, the Russians intensified their assaults towards Kalynivka to directly attack the center of Chasiv Yar from the north. The situation in Vovchansk remains highly volatile as the Armed Forces of Ukraine have launched significant counterattacks on different vectors within the city. Recent developments indicate substantial gains by Ukrainian forces, who have managed to recapture several key areas within the city.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have successfully counterattacked in Vovchansk, recapturing several blocks and pushing Russian forces out of parts of the city center. According to a renowned German press military analyst, in mid-May, Russian forces captured the northern part of Vovchansk and expanded to several central blocks. However, recent Ukrainian advancements have reduced the Russian control to approximately a quarter of the city, down from nearly half just days ago. Remarkably, the recaptured areas are located mainly in 3 areas, that is, just west of the Citadel, a bit further south close to the aggregate plant, and in the easternmost area of the city, where the Ukrainians are pushing strongly to the north. Here, Russians severely misjudged their own capabilities and prematurely launched their offensive, while Ukrainians are on the brink of turning the tide and starting their counteroffensive.

As you remember, in the first several days of the Russian Kharkiv offensive, Ukrainians conducted a fighting withdrawal from the border. The reason why they did this is to buy time for further reinforcements to arrive at the main defensive line near the settlements of Lyptsi and Vesele. The most interesting updates come from the southern flank of Chasiv Yar. Here, the Russians intensified their assaults, reinforced their striking groups, and attempted to conduct an offensive operation across the canal in hopes of cutting off Ukrainian forces in the Kanal district.

After Russian forces consolidated control over the large forest to the east of the canal, the Russian commanders started devising a new plan. The forest provided cover from detection by drones and further FPV drone strikes or artillery strikes, so Russians used it to accumulate large forces for two new assault directions. The forest enables a decent staging ground for a new assault direction to the south of the Kanal district and for assault towards the Novy district to the west of the canal.

The initial Russian goal was to advance as quickly as possible and establish a deep buffer zone on the Ukrainian side of the border.
