Iran is now headed for a run-off election between reformist Masoud Pezeshkian (a heart surgeon-turned-politician, who has served as health minister and first deputy speaker of parliament), and conservative Saeed Jalili (a member of the Expediency Discernment Council and Iran's top nuclear negotiator during the JCPOA talks), after neither candidate received a majority.

Independent Iranian Journalist Setareh Sadeqi noted that while the next president will have an impact on domestic policy, it is not expected that there will be any changes to Iran's role as a key member of the Axis of Resistance, an its support for the people of Palestine.

Dozens of countries sent their representatives to Switzerland for Zelensky's overhyped summit, which quickly turned into a "Blame Putin" party that resulted in a final declaration, which at least a dozen countries (including Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa refused to sign).

International Relations and Security Analyst Mark Sleboda noted that Russian President Putin's decision to list his demands for peace talks with Ukraine before the summit began, served as a reminder to the attendees that Moscow is willing to negotiate and should have been invited, in order for the summit to be legitimate.

As the Biden Admin was quick to note, while they did withhold a single shipment that was set to be used on Rafah... they have been providing billions of dollars in lethal aid to Israel otherwise.

Russian President Putin made his first state visit to North Korea in 24 years this week, where he met with the country's leader, Kim Jong-un, and they committed to a new strategic partnership treaty that includes the promise of "mutual aid" if one of their countries is attacked.

Hamas has agreed to move forward with the ceasefire and hostage deal passed by the UN Security Council, and the only problem seems to be... Israel. While the talks were ongoing, Israel killed another 40 Palestinians in Gaza, as the confirmed death toll soars past 37,000 Palestinians killed by Israel, with thousands more buried under the rubble.

When Israel isn't killing 200+ Palestinians in a single day, it's escalating tensions with Hezbollah, with Israeli officials acting as though they're considering an invasion of Lebanon.

Palestinian-Syrian Journalist Laith Marouf noted that Hezbollah is sending plenty of signals that if Netanyahu chooses to pursue a full-scale war in the north, it will be infinitely more embarrassing for Israel than the failure that has been their pledge to "defeat" Hamas.

Israel's president just became the latest official to threaten a full-scale war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, after Netanyahu claimed Israel is "prepared for very intense action in the north."

This, as Hezbollah's deputy chief said this week that the group is not seeking to widen its conflict with Israel but is "ready for the battle and will not allow Israel to secure any victories."

Meanwhile, Russian President Putin is calling out the ongoing claims from NATO members that Russia is planning some kind of attack on the alliance, calling the allegations "Bulls**t."

At the same time, Putin is noting that as Western countries lift their restrictions on certain weapons they send to Kiev and allow them to be used on Russian territory... Moscow could easily do the same by providing long-range weapons to others to strike Western targets.

Tensions continue to build on the border between Lebanon and Israel, as Hezbollah's rockets spark fires in northern Israel. Netanyahu claimed that Israel is "prepared for very intense action in the north," as Hezbollah's deputy chief said the group is not seeking to widen its conflict with Israel but is "ready for the battle and will not allow Israel to secure any victories."

Zelensky's 5-year term came to an end this month, which has fueled the question of who is now the "legitimate" president of Ukraine, as Zelensky refused to allow elections, due to the fact that he has kept the country under martial law...

International Relations and Security Analyst Mark Sleboda noted that the question of the Ukrainian presidency shouldn't start on 20 May 2024... it should go back a decade to the 2014 coup in Kiev that overthrew the last legitimate democratically-elected Ukrainian president.

Zelensky is scrambling to prove he has support from the West amid reports that even Biden is planning to attend a Hollywood fundraiser instead of the NATO-backed "Ukraine Peace Summit" (which notably doesn't include Russia).

Meanwhile, NATO Chief Stoltenberg is the latest leader in the alliance to put his support behind removing restrictions on the weapons NATO sends to Ukraine and allowing them to be used on "military targets" inside Russia.

Of course, no one wants to talk about how many Western-supplied weapons Kiev has used against "non-military targets" in Russia, or the fact that the alliance isn't remotely prepared for the escalations it is pursuing.

Despite international warnings, Israel continues to move forward with its ground invasion of Rafah, as the UN estimates that more than 600,000 Palestinians have fled the city in a matter of days, the majority of who have already been displaced from their homes in the Gaza Strip, and facing famine.
